How to Set Up an Ergonomic Home Office: The Complete Guide for the Discerning Remote Worker

Seven research-backed principles to transform any domestic space into a functional workstation.

Your back bothers you most at the end of the day. You shift position, adjust the chair, perhaps place a cushion behind your lower back. The discomfort returns the next day. A better-adjusted workstation may help with comfort; persistent or worsening pain deserves advice from a health professional.

According to the INRS (France's national occupational health and safety institute), musculoskeletal disorders account for more than 80% of recognised occupational diseases in France. In 2021, compensated upper- and lower-limb MSDs led to more than 11 million lost working days and €1 billion in costs covered by contributions from employers in the general scheme. Over the same period, the share of French employees working remotely at least occasionally rose from 9% in 2019 to 26% in 2023, according to DARES, France's labour-statistics directorate. At home, screen, chair, and work-surface adjustments often fall to the remote worker.

This guide will not sell you a chair. It gives you the ergonomic principles that, applied with rigour, transform any domestic space into a functional workstation. Seven principles, grounded in research and tested in practice.


01. The principle of open angles

Stable support and angles close to a right angle, without holding one fixed posture.

Before discussing accessories, materials, or decoration, look at your support points and joint angles. INRS notes that there is no ideal posture, but describes a seated position of lesser discomfort as a starting point.

Your feet rest flat. Your knees form a right or slightly obtuse angle, without pressure behind them. Your shoulders stay relaxed, your elbows remain close to the body at an angle between 90 and 135 degrees, and your hands continue the line of your forearms.

These are adjustment markers, not a pose to hold all day. The seat and work surface should let you approach them while leaving room to move and change position.

The 30-second test

Sit at your desk as it is configured today. Place your hands on the keyboard. Do your shoulders rise toward your ears? Do your wrists bend upward? Do your feet touch the floor without you having to slide forward on the seat? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, your workstation is not properly adjusted.

The good news: correcting these angles costs nothing. A stack of books under the screen. An improvised footrest. A lumbar cushion. The expensive solutions come later, if they come at all. The angles come first.

02. The screen: the visual comfort zone

Monitor position influences the position of the head and neck. A useful adjustment also accounts for screen size, resolution, and your vision.

INRS gives a general eye-to-screen distance of 50 to 70 cm, roughly an arm's length, adjusted for the display and the user.

For height, place the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, and lower it for progressive lenses. In a 1998 Ergonomics field study, 22 participants free to adjust their displays chose distances between 60 and 100 cm and a gaze between horizontal and 16 degrees downward. That range describes their preferences, not a universal measurement.

Adjust the tilt only if it improves readability without creating reflections. The display should remain easy to orient and incline.

Why this matters

In a randomised trial of 64 office workers, the group receiving individual workstation adjustments reported lower pain intensity in the neck, shoulders, upper back, and wrists or hands than the control group. The study found neither a group × time interaction nor an effect on the lower back or elbows. Adjustment may therefore contribute to comfort, but it is not a treatment and cannot guarantee that pain will resolve.

The laptop case. A laptop placed flat does not allow the screen and input devices to be adjusted separately. For prolonged use, INRS advises connecting it to an external display, keyboard, and mouse. If an external display is not available, raise the laptop on a stable support and add a separate keyboard and mouse.

The dual-monitor case. Place the most frequently viewed display directly in front of you. If you use both equally, put them side by side in front of you, at the same height and a comparable distance from your eyes. This arrangement limits repeated rotation toward one side.

03. Seating: the science of lumbar support

Telling yourself to "sit up straight" does not adjust the workstation. INRS instead recommends a chair suited to the work and the user, with adjustments that support the back and allow changes of posture.

The role of an ergonomic chair is not to force you into a military posture. It is to support the lumbar curve so that your muscles do not have to do so constantly.

Begin with seat height, so that your feet rest on the floor or a footrest. The seat depth should let your lower back meet the backrest without pressure behind your knees. Then adjust the backrest to support the lower back and the armrests to support your forearms without raising your shoulders or preventing the chair from moving close to the desk.

The kitchen chair situation. A dining chair offers few adjustments. Temporary lumbar support may improve contact with the backrest, but it does not fix a seat that is too high or a badly placed work surface. Before buying, identify the adjustment that is actually missing: height, seat depth, backrest, or armrests.

What to test before buying. Try the chair in a real working posture when possible. Does the backrest support the lower back? Does the front of the seat avoid pressure behind the knees? Can the armrests be adjusted without blocking access to the desk? Can you change position easily?

The budget question. No price threshold guarantees that a chair will suit your body. Compare the adjustment range, stability, and the opportunity to try the chair first. The useful choice is the one that adapts to the workstation and allows movement, not the one with the most technical label.

04. Lighting: the invisible factor

We talk a great deal about posture. Far less about light. That is a mistake, because lighting affects both visual fatigue and posture: when you squint to read a screen washed out by glare, you lean forward without realising it.

Office lighting involves several adjustments. For the work surface, INRS recommends 300 to 500 lux with a light-background display and 200 to 300 lux with a dark background. Keep the contrast between the display, work surface, and room moderate.

Next, task lighting, which illuminates paper documents or the keyboard without casting glare on the screen. Desk lamps with an articulated arm allow you to direct the light downward and forward, keeping the screen out of the direct beam.

Finally, the management of natural light. Working with a window behind you creates screen reflections. Facing the window, the glare fatigues the eyes. The ideal position places the window to the side, perpendicular to the screen axis. Blinds or sheer curtains allow you to modulate the light input throughout the day.

Colour temperature

For screen work, INRS gives 3000 to 4000 K as a practical compromise. Colour temperature does not correct glare or excessive contrast: adjust the lamp's position, direction, and intensity first.

05. Visual order: when the brain works against you

Visual order is not an aesthetic indulgence. It is a cognitive choice.

In a functional-imaging experiment, McMains and Kastner showed that several stimuli presented at once compete for representation in the visual cortex and that attention modulates that competition. The study used controlled stimuli, not desks: it cannot measure the productivity effect of an object placed beside a keyboard.

The other findings need the same care. In a study of 60 spouses in dual-income households, wives who described their homes with more words related to clutter and incompleteness had flatter daily cortisol slopes. This was a household correlation, not a causal effect of clearing a desk. In three experiments published in Psychological Science in 2013, an orderly room was associated with healthier snack choices, more donations, and a preference for a conventional option, while a disorderly room supported creativity. The study did not measure perseverance at work.

The "end-of-day desk" principle

Before leaving your workstation, return every object to its place. The next morning, you will begin your day in a space that demands no filtering effort. It is a five-minute ritual whose cumulative effect is considerable.

06. Movement: the perfect posture is the one that changes

A well-adjusted workstation does not make an immobile posture desirable. INRS recommends a layout with enough room to move, change position, and stretch.

The practical point is simple: no angle should become an instruction to sit rigidly. Change posture according to the task and your comfort.

On the Cornell University Ergonomics Web, Alan Hedge proposes the 20-8-2 marker: 20 minutes seated, 8 minutes standing, and 2 minutes standing or moving. A sit-stand desk can make alternation easier, but it is neither mandatory nor sufficient. In a small six-month cluster randomised trial of 38 office workers, the equipped group reduced overall musculoskeletal discomfort and post-work fatigue. The authors found no time × group interaction, however. The result suggests a possible benefit without establishing its precise size.

The "permanent standing desk" trap. The aim is not to replace one prolonged position with another. The useful role of an adjustable desk is to make alternation easier.

Three micro-exercises to build in

Choose brief, comfortable movements: a few slow shoulder rolls, a gentle head tilt to each side, then wrist movements without forcing the range. Stop if a movement causes pain, dizziness, or tingling. Seek advice from a health professional for persistent or recurring symptoms.

07. Physical separation: why your office needs a boundary

The boundary between work and rest sometimes comes down to a lamp you switch off.

The final principle is not biomechanical. When workspace and living space merge, the end of the working day may lack a visible cue. Even a light separation can help mark the transition.

The ideal separation is spatial: a dedicated room, however small, with a door that closes. If that is not possible, the separation can be symbolic. A desk that is put away at the end of the day. A screen that marks the boundary. An opening and closing ritual: switching on the desk lamp in the morning, switching it off in the evening.

Synthesis: the seven principles in practice

These principles do not work in isolation. A well-placed screen does not compensate for a badly adjusted chair. Good lighting does not solve a mouse placed too far away. Ergonomics is adjusted at the level of the whole workstation.

If you had to act today, here is the order of priority.

Start by checking your angles (elbows, knees, hips). It is free and immediate. Then adjust the position of your screen: height, distance, tilt. Next, evaluate your seating. After that, tackle lighting and cable management. Integrate movement into your day. And materialise the boundary between your workspace and your living space.

Accessories and furniture come afterwards, to refine a foundation that is already solid. A monitor stand is useless if you do not know at what height to set it. A cable tray serves no purpose if your desk faces a window that blinds you.

Budget follows diagnosis

There is no universal budget for an ergonomic workstation. Begin with free adjustments, then buy only what addresses an identified constraint: foot support, screen height, separate input devices, or back support. Before counting on reimbursement, check your employer's policy and the agreements that apply to your situation. Remote work deserves better than a corner of the kitchen table and a screen balanced on a stack of books. But it does not demand an unlimited budget either. What it asks for is rigour and the willingness to treat your workspace as a performance tool rather than an accident of your domestic life.
